Diagnostic Controversies In Forensic Psychology Practice

Karen Franklin, PhD and Craig Lareau, JD, PhD, ABPP

Psychologists who provide forensic evaluations and expert testimony need the latest tools in order to ensure reliable and valid information. Two expert forensic evaluators will provide a framework to assist practitioners in understanding current controversies over the reliability and validity of Antisocial Personality Disorder and psychopathy, sexual disorders in Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) proceedings, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in litigation.

Karen Franklin, PhD is an Adjunct Professor in Forensic Psychology at CSPP/Alliant International University, a member of CPA's Ethics Committee, and a forensic psychologist in private practice specializing in the evaluation of criminal defendants. Craig Lareau, J.D., PhD, ABPP is Chair of the Department of Psychology and Director of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology at Patton State Hospital, Chair of CPA's Division I (Clinical and Professional Practice) and Forensic Section, and an independent practitioner specializing in trial consultation and criminal and forensic evaluation.

Stephen E. Finn, PhD

Stephen E. Finn, PhD, is an international expert in personality assessment and has pioneered work on Therapeutic Assessment, a method that systematically integrates psychological assessment with in-depth psychotherapy. Dr. Finn will demonstrate collaborative psychological assessment and feedback techniques for practitioners that help families develop new understandings of their children's problems and promote positive change. It is assumed that participants will have some previous training in doing family therapy and/or psychological testing.

Stephen E. Finn PhD is the founder of the Center for Therapeutic Assessment in Austin, TX, a private practice group specializing in the integration of psychological assessment and psychotherapy.

Follow Your Star: Secrets of How Psychologists Become Successful Leaders.

How can psychologists enhance their leadership abilities? Three nationally recognized psychologist consultants will review leadership models and explain the typical strengths and potential challenges facing psychologists who are in leadership roles. Participants will: (1) complete an on-line leadership survey prior to the session, which is scored and discussed during the Institute; (2) create an individual development plan; and (3) analyze and discuss strategies for responding to and managing a variety of common leadership challenges using vignettes based on experiences they have provided in advance. Large and small group discussions with colleague feedback will provide a lively and interactive experience. This Institute provides an extraordinary opportunity to learn from the experts.

Rebecca Turner, PhD and Ira Levin, PhD are Professors in the Organizational Psychology Division , Marshall Goldsmith School of Management, Alliant International University, San Francisco, where Dr. Levin is the Program Director. Dr. Turner provides consultation to businesses and non-profit organizations to enhance leadership effectiveness. She represents CPA Division III (Industrial/Organizational Psychology) on the CPA Board of Directors. Dr. Levin provides consultation on executive and executive team development in healthcare and technology corporations. Judith S. Blanton, PhD is Senior Consultant for RHR International, a recruitment and management development company and Director of Professional Affairs, Los Angeles office. She is the 2008 Chair of CPA Division III.
