The California Psychological Association’s
21st Annual Leadership & Advocacy Conference (LAC)
Sunday - Tuesday, March 21 - 23, 2010
Sacramento, California

CPA's advocacy program protects our license and scope of practice, advances our opportunities for practice and employment without discrimination, and works to preserve access to psychologists' services by the public. CPA's Leadership and Advocacy Conference trains psychologists in the elements of CPA's advocacy program and culminates in a day of lobbying for CPA's advocacy agenda with legislators at the state capitol.

What To Expect

Registration will be held from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm on Sunday, March 21 at the CSAC Conference Center. Prior to registration, it is recommended that you drop your luggage off at the hotel, or check into your room if the hotel will allow early check in. Please give yourself enough time to do this if you choose, because the event will begin promptly at 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Luggage can be stored at the CSAC center if you are coming directly from the airport.

Sunday and Monday’s training will focus primarily on Chapter and Division leadership development training, with strategies for building effective collaboration and communication with CPA. Tuesday will be our traditional Advocacy Day where we will discuss current issues regarding psychology, provide advocacy training and meet with Legislators and their staff in the Capitol about our legislative agenda.

Legislative Office Visits

The Tuesday session consists of grassroots training and legislative office visits with your elected officials in the Senate and Assembly.  Contact with your legislators is an essential step in the advocacy process.  By meeting with your Senators and Assemblymembers, or their staff, you can open the door to an ongoing and productive relationship.  In many cases, our members have become a source of expertise that their elected officials refer to for additional information or research. For your convenience, CPA staff will be scheduling all appointments and will match you with your State Senator and State Assemblymember.

Legislative Reception

On Monday, March 22 delegates will have an opportunity to enjoy a legislative reception while socializing with invited California legislators.

Attendees to the Advocacy Day on Tuesday are encouraged and welcome to attend the Monday night reception, but will be responsible for their own hotel accommodations for the night.

LAC events will begin Sunday at 12:30 pm and will end Tuesday at 5:00 pm. Attendees are responsible for their own travel arrangements.

Hotel Arrangements

CPA and Division I are providing accommodations at the Citizen Hotel located at 925 J Street.

CPA and Division I will reimburse qualified LAC participants for half of the cost of a room at CPA's special rate of $170 per night including taxes. You will be reimbursed for $170, which means if you get a roommate for the duration of your stay, your stay will be covered.   Total for two nights will be $340. If you share a room, each person will receive $170, resulting in no costs to you.  If you have a private room room your total costs will be $340. CPA will reimburse you $170 resulting in a cost of $170 to you.

You are responsible for booking your own hotel room. Please book your room early - the rooms at this rate are on a first come first served basis, and this special rate ends on March 11, 2010.

Upon registering for the LAC you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to book your room. Please remember to do so soon, as space at the special rate is limited. If you are unable to book a room before the room block becomes full, or prior to March 11th, CPA will still reimburse you half you the special rate (1/2 of $170.00 per night including tax - you are responsible for incidentals) you would be responsible for the additional cost.

Parking at the hotel is available $25 dollars per night, CPA will not reimburse you for any parking.  There are various city lots scattered around the area or you can find limited street parking if  you wish for approximately $18 per day.

While attendees of the Advocacy day on Tuesday are more then welcome to spend the night on Monday, they will not be reimbursed for their expenses and are not eligible to receive the CPA discount at the Citizen Hotel.
