Ethical codes call on mental health professionals to monitor their own personal problems and emotional stability. Our fifth course on ethics focuses on the stresses of clinical practice and how such pressures can impact judgment. After all, our work involves a degree of openness to the unconscious. The daily task of handling psychologically complicated projections can become a challenge at times. There are certainly rough stretches in mental health careers. Old wisdom stories provide guidance for surviving ordeals. We will explore tales about being swallowed by great sea creatures to see what wisdom they offer for handling emotional distress in the course of our professional duties. The main focus will be on the familiar children’s story Pinocchio, with some discussion of its inspiration, the tale of Jonah and the great fish. Emphasis will be on the potential development that can stem from arduous professional experiences.

Instructor Jonathan Young, PhD – psychologist PSY10231 and storyteller -- assisted Joseph Campbell at seminars and served as founding curator of the Joseph Campbell Archives and Library. Dr. Young has a private practice in Santa Barbara, and also does consultation by phone and Skype.
