Description: Dr. Francis's research explores how biological, psychological and social processes interact to influence health and disease vulnerability. Through experience, social factors become embedded in our biology. An example is the development of the stress axis, which is exquisitely sensitive to regulation by social forces observable at the level of the epigenome. Dr. Papero will discuss how disturbances of the family system impact symptom development, potentially through the regulation of gene expression and how new knowledge of gene x environment interaction is impacting the scientific underpinnings of diagnosis in mental health. Dr. Francis and Dr. Papero will draw out implications for interventions in family and community systems.
