The California Psychological Association's
26th Annual Leadership & Advocacy Day
Tuesday, March 24, 2015

The annual CPA Leadership and Advocacy Day gives students the opportunity to lobby for the profession of psychology at the California Capitol building. Before engaging in lobby visits, attendees will learn about current bills, advocacy work, and the legislative process. CPA leadership members as well as our lobbyist, Amanda Levy, will provide training on how to build relationships with legislators. Following the training, attendees will break up by legislative district groups to meet with their local legislators and staff members to discuss current bills and issues related to mental health care.

Come “storm” the capitol with us to lobby on behalf of CPA and the clients we serve! This event is not to be missed!

What To Expect

CPA will provide both a continental breakfast and lunch! Please dress in business attire and bring business cards if you have them. Please keep in mind that this is not your typical psychological conference. Instead, it is an event where you are representing the field of psychology to legislators and legislative staff - PROFESSIONALISM IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE! There will also be a CPAGS Social Hour at the end of the day near the capitol and hotel, which will be a great opportunity to relax and chat with fellow students! Location to be determined, so stay tuned!

You must be a CPAGS member to attend LAD.  There is NO FEE to attend the event. Registration will close March 6th. There are a limited number of spots for students so registering as soon as possible is recommended. If you are unable to attend for any reason after registering, please let Tracey Wheeler know. Given the nature of the event (pre-arranged groups for appointments with legislators, and planning for food), we must know if people who have registered can no longer attend so that we can rearrange.

Where Will the Event Take Place?

The Citizen Hotel, 926 J Street, Sacramento CA 95814 just blocks away from the Capitol Building.

Students wishing to spend Monday night in Sacramento are responsible for arranging and paying for their own hotel arrangements. Students may also contact CPAGS to arrange a stay with a local student. While we cannot guarantee this, we will do all that we can to coordinate it. Students wishing to stay in a hotel and split hotel costs can either contact CPAGS or post to the CPAGS listserv and coordinate shared hotel rooms with other students attending.

CPA will provide a continental breakfast and lunch to all attendees.

Travel Award Information

Please read carefully

Travel reimbursements (awards) are available to CPAGS members only. Funds are limited and awards are based on the availability of funds at the time of the event, meaning the travel reimbursements are NOT GUARANTEED. Preference is given to long distance travelers (60 miles or more from event location). In order to be eligible for the award, students must complete the online application listed below. PLEASE NOTE that reimbursement funds will be awarded AFTER the event. Verification of attendance, completion of the CPA travel reward form (provided at the conference), and receipts/driving directions verifying travel costs are necessary to qualify for the travel award. If you drive, please remember to bring a printed map of your route, including mileage, to the event.

Cost covered

CPA will reimburse for the cost of airfare, train or bus, as well as driving mileage. Reimbursements amounts for ALL travel may not exceed the amount of average airfare approximately 3 weeks prior to the event. So, if you drive a long distance, although the travel award form calculates by mileage ($0.575/mi), that amount will be capped at the appropriate airfare rate. It’s also important to note that gas and hotel costs ARE NOT COVERED. CPAGS will try to coordinate a local host if you need to stay overnight near the event.

What this all means

If you are traveling a long distance, first and foremost we encourage carpooling, as we have limited funds and this enables us to support more students in attending. If you are traveling alone, or have scheduling restrictions, it may actually be simpler to fly versus drive. We know that California is a big state! If you choose to fly, please buy your plane ticket as soon as possible to keep the airfare amount low.

Further information for traveling to LAD

Once you have registered and let us know how you plan to travel, we will provide driving directions and parking instructions. And for those who are flying, we will try to coordinate a morning pick-up at the airport in Sacramento to ease travel from the airport to the event.Travel Arrangements.

Travel Arrangements

LAD events will begin Tuesday at 8:00 am and will end at 5:00 pm (or later if you plan on attending CPAGS happy hour).

Southwest Airlines offers direct service to Sacramento from Burbank, Los Angeles, Ontario, Orange County and San Diego.

Transportation From Airport

Supershuttle, taxis, and Uber/Lyft car service are available outside of the airport’s two terminals and cost approximately $20+ one-way between the airport and downtown Sacramento.

CPA is not able to reimburse for ground transportation to or from the airport.
