A Call to Action

Course Description:
This presentation will briefly review the socio-political history of substance use in the U.S. We will explore some of the components of addiction, including the impact of trauma and evolutionary psychology. Psychological and social determinants will be discussed, such as co-occurring mental health concerns, changes in substances, public health, and policy changes. We will look at the current field of addiction services in the rapidly changing healthcare landscape, and offer new directions for the future of recovery, including shifts in models of care, leveraging technology to impact the greatest good, and grassroots involvement. Lastly, we will discuss how individuals and families struggling with addiction may be impacted by the current COVID-19 public health crisis.

After attending this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. List three different substance use treatment models.
  2. Describe three different barriers to treatment.
  3. Identify three concrete steps they can take to address addiction as a public health crisis.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Jessica Byrd-Olmstead works with a wide range of clinical concerns, she has specialized training in Addiction, Adolescent Development, and Gender Identity and is an advisor for a health tech startup. She has advocated at state and federal levels for improved psychological services for the community. Dr. Byrd is President of the Santa Clara County Psychological Association.
