Course Description:
What do psychologists owe clients to protect them from our own mortality? Ethical and legal standards require California psychologists to have an emergency practice plan in place, in case of therapist incapacitation or death. This practical workshop addresses the clinical and business considerations of creating a comprehensive Professional Will and selecting a Practice Executor capable of fulfilling your wishes. Several accessible solutions will be presented to help navigate this often avoided yet essential task, ensuring ethical compliance, protecting patients from the risks of traumatic termination, and sparing colleagues and family from unnecessary burden. Lived experience and clinical vignettes are shared in this moving and clinically relevant presentation.

Level:
Intermediate

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

List one ethical and one regulatory guideline relevant to the psychotherapist’s ethical duty to plan for sudden terminations.

Describe at least one important component to include in a plan/Professional Will.

List two clinical, business, and practical duties of a Practice Executor and guidelines for best practice.

    Course Description:
In this increasingly politicized ecosystem, clients are becoming more aware of and celebrating their identities while also facing increased stigma against some of their minoritized identities. In this talk, we will discuss
how clinicians can attend to minority stress caused by microaggressions. Microaggressions are casual or everyday occurrences that, regardless of intent, communicate a derogatory message about one’s identity. Drawing on the recent work of Dr. Sue and colleagues,
we will also discuss microinterventions which are ways to decenter and disrupt the impact of microaggressions. Upon completion of this training, clinicians will be better able to help validate clients’ experiences of microaggressions, tend to the accumulative
stress caused by these experiences, and also help clients to empower themselves with microinterventions to respond to these occurrences.

Level:
Advanced

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

Identify and define two negative impacts of microaggressions.

Identify at least two ways to empower clients to buffer against the impacts of microaggressions using microinterventions.

Describe at least one clinical tool for using microinterventions as effective allyship for ourselves.

Socially Responsible Neuropsychology:
What is it, Where has it been, and Where does it go from now?

On-Demand Course
Based on a webinar developed by
CPA’s Division of Neuropsychology (Division VIII)

Course Description:

The Socially Responsibility Neuropsychology (SRN), an ethical framework, was born in 2014 as a call to action for the field to shift from the individual to the programmatic or systemic response to attend to the underserved cultural communities by employing
an equitable lens. Through the years, and prior to the societal awakenings brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest in 2020, this framework was operationalized through training guidelines and approaches to clinical cases by integrating
principles of neuroscience and societal factors that impact health equity (literacy, bilingualism, poor nutrition, access to care, etc). Most recently, the 2022 Minnesota Neuropsychology Conference announced its efforts to add advocacy as a competency
benchmark, as originally suggested by the SRN model. However, the challenge persists on how to integrate principles and develop formalized training guidelines of advocacy into the clinical work with underserved cultural communities without further
increasing the already overburdened underrepresented providers who serve this patient population. Much like the initial SRN call, this talk will present the Advocacy Model of Equitable Decision-Making in Neuropsychology as a competency specific guideline
that calls on all our neuropsychology colleagues to engage as agents of change and promotes actionable steps to integrate advocacy within clinical assessments with the aim of promoting health equity.

Level:

Intermediate

After attending this On-Demand Course, attendees will be able to:

Identify the Three Pillars of the SRN model.

State the main goal and five components of the Advocacy Model of Equitable Decision-Making in Neuropsychology.

Describe one application of the Advocacy Model of Equitable Decision-Making in Neuropsychology in a clinical neuropsychological assessment.

Suicide is the most common psychological emergency that therapists will encounter, and it is on the rise. For mental health professionals with an active clinical practice, suicide is an occupational hazard that can be both emotionally and practically devastating. Recent research has identified suicide-specific therapies that are effective in treating both suicidal ideation and behavior. Most therapists are not aware of them nor have they been trained in them, so most suicidal clients do not receive these potentially lifesaving treatments. This online course with suicidologist Dr. Lisa Firestone will provide an invaluable opportunity for therapists to become familiar with risk assessment and effective crisis interventions, as well as empirically validated, evidence-based treatments for suicide that are fast becoming the standard of care.

Course Description:

In this presentation, Dr. Sullivan-Baca will first provide an overview of historical research
disparities that have led to reduced understanding of women’s issues in neuropsychology. She
will then focus on specific lines of contemporary women’s neuropsychology research and the
lessons they teach us about clinical practice with women patients. While several specific
disorders/current lines of research will be mentioned, Dr. Sullivan-Baca’s own work on (1)
epilepsy and (2) pregnancy-related stroke will be part of the focus of the talk to highlight how
women are differentially affected by prevalent conditions and how women’s-specific issues exist
in our field.

Cognitive and Neural Perspectives on
Bilingualism and Implications for Assessment

On-Demand Course
Based on a webinar developed by
CPA’s Division of Neuropsychology (Division VIII)

Course Description:

As the number of bilingual individuals in the U.S. continues to exponentially increase, it is important to understand how experience with multiple languages affects the brain and the implications it has for clinical assessment. In this talk, Dr. Stasenko will summarize the main theories of how bilingualism may sculp the brain and differentially affect cognition relative to monolingualism. She will present research evaluating the effects of bilingualism in Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy, which suggests that bilingualism may act as a potential resilience factor in neurological disease. She will also discuss challenges inherent to neuropsychological assessment of bilinguals, along with best practices to overcome them.

Level:

Intermediate

After attending this On-Demand Course, attendees will be able to:

List three bilingual language characteristics that are important to assess when determining the language for testing or interpreting a cognitive profile.

Identify two common differences in neural networks and cognitive profiles between bilinguals and monolinguals.

List two factors that may modulate whether languages have shared or unique neural representation and how this may affect clinical outcomes.

Name two populations in which bilingualism may have a neuroprotective effect.

About the Presenter:

Alena Stasenko, PhD is a postdoctoral researcher at UCSD with an interest in understanding how bilingualism affects cognition and neural networks in epilepsy, aging, and other neurological disorders. She received her PhD from the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program and completed her clinical internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Neuropsychological Assessment of Native Americans:
Perspectives, Skills, and Case Applications

On-Demand Course
Based on a webinar developed by
CPA’s Division of Neuropsychology (Division VIII)

Course Description:

Native Americans are a very diverse population that also share many common characteristics. Dimensions of diversity include tribal history; intergenerational traumas; religions; languages; current tribal legal, healthcare, and educational systems; inter-tribal
relationships; and patterns of acculturation and enculturation. Successful clinical encounters depend upon the neuropsychologist being knowledgeable about both the common and the specific characteristics of their local populations and their particular
client. In this presentation, we will discuss how clinicians can learn about their local populations and about their specific clients. We will discuss clinical skills in establishing rapport and developing culturally appropriate recommendations. We
will illustrate these principles through a case study that the authors collaborated on. This was a criminal forensic evaluation of a Cherokee youth accused of murder.

Level:

Intermediate

After attending this On-Demand Course, attendees will be able to:

Identify at least five cultural dimensions that have influence on Native Americans’ neuropsychological functioning.

Describe at least three strategies for learning about local Native American tribes.

Identify at least five dimensions of a Native American’s individual identity that are pertinent to understanding their neuropsychological functioning.

Identify at least five tribal institutions that are distinctive from corresponding non-tribal institutions and that are pertinent to neuropsychological community reintegration.

About the Presenter:

Diana Hereld, PsyD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Clinical Neuropsychology at the UCLA Semel Institute. She was born in Suquamish, Washington and is a member of Cherokee Nation.

    Course Description:
This 90-minute intermediate-level training examines how minority stress, gender noise, and structural inequities shape mental health outcomes for transgender and non-binary individuals across the lifespan. Drawing on the Gender Affirmative Model, trauma-informed care, and emerging research on sociopolitical determinants of health, this training situates distress not within identity but within systemic oppression. Participants will explore the cumulative psychological impact of discrimination, microaggressions, and legislative restrictions, alongside protective factors such as affirmation, family support, and access to care. Participants will explore clinically relevant strategies to mitigate harm, enhance resilience, and provide developmentally responsive, affirming care.

Level:
Intermediate

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

Identify at least three mechanisms through which systemic stigma contributes to mental health disparities in transgender and non-binary individuals.

Differentiate between gender dysphoria and gender noise by identifying at least two distinguishing clinical features of each construct.

Describe at least three lifespan-specific manifestations of minority stress and gender noise across youth, adulthood, and older adulthood.

Sequence XVI:
Risk, Relationship, and Responsibility:
Ethics and Risk Management in the Web of Modern Practice
Live Webinar via Zoom

Saturday, June 27, 2026
9:00 am - 4:00 pm (PT)

Presented by: Daniel O. Taube, JD, PhD

Workshop Description:

Psychological practice today unfolds within an increasingly complex and interconnected landscape—one that places unprecedented demands on both new and experienced clinicians. Expanding scopes of practice, rapidly evolving technologies, interjurisdictional
care, and continued ethical and regulatory scrutiny have fundamentally reshaped what it means to practice responsibly. The challenge goes beyond understanding ethical principles to applying them skillfully, compassionately, and coherently across overlapping
roles, systems, and expectations where decisions in one area often ripple outward into others.

This workshop offers an integrated, systems-informed framework for navigating complexity with clarity and confidence, supporting thoughtful, care-driven decision-making that protects clients, preserves trust, and sustains clinicians over
    time.

Three interconnected dimensions of contemporary practice will be explored. Participants will examine the relational foundations of ethical work, including informed consent as an ongoing process and the management of multiple relationships
and boundary complexities that arise when professional roles and contexts intersect. The focus then turns to the digital and interjurisdictional landscape, addressing ethical responsibilities related to artificial intelligence (AI), digital privacy,
and practicing across regions and regulatory contexts—where actions in one setting can have implications far beyond it. The workshop concludes with the legal and regulatory dimensions of modern practice, including documentation, multi-state practice
considerations, and responding skillfully to licensing board complaints as professional reach and responsibility expand.

Throughout, the emphasis is on helping clinicians make integrated, ethical, and defensible decisions in a complex environment without becoming reactive, overly cautious, or disconnected from care. Participants will leave with practical
strategies, renewed clarity, and a steadier sense of how to strengthen their professional structures and practice ethically, responsibly, and sustainably within today’s evolving landscape.

Level:

Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

Describe at least four methods to improve ethical and risk management decision-making.

Identify three elements of a fully informed consent process.

Delineate at least three steps in determining whether a boundary crossing is more likely to be a harmful violation.

Define four aspects of AI that should be evaluated before its adoption for professional practice.

List at least three ethical and risk management aspects of interjurisdictional practice.

Describe three central themes in documentation.

Identify three methods of addressing licensing board complaints.

    Course Description:
Couples seeking relationship therapy often struggle with their sexual relationship. However, long-standing divides between the fields of couples and sex therapy leave couples therapists feeling ill-prepared to address sex in therapy. This workshop summarizes an attachment-focused framework based on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to assess and address sexual difficulties, even if you’re not a sex therapist.

Level:
Intermediate

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

Describe a couple’s sexual distress using an attachment framework.

Name at least one way to assess sexual distress in a couple.

Name at least two interventions to assist couples in creating more safety and connection in discussing and addressing their sexual difficulties.

Increase self-awareness by identifying one personal block to more flexibly discussing sexual content in couple’s therapy.

Nearly 40% of trauma survivors drop out of therapy because they find it “too distressing.” Many also might struggle with being able to trust their therapist or to find a way to express what they are going through. When trauma survivors turn to loved ones for support, many are invalidated or shamed about their reactions to their traumatic experiences. As a result, many trauma survivors experience pervasive feelings of loneliness.

Some scientists call loneliness the new epidemic, while others dub loneliness as “The New Smoking.” In addition to the global spikes in suicide rates, loneliness has been found to negatively impact the human immune and cardiovascular system in a similar way as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day or daily alcohol abuse.

Hence, many trauma survivors turn to TV shows, books, movies, or video games for comfort as a way of managing loneliness and finding a sense of connection and belonging, especially when lacking these kinds of meaningful connections in real-life. The connections that many trauma survivors forge with fictional TV shows, books, and video game characters can serve as meaningful mental health resources.

Superhero Therapy (ST) refers to incorporating popular culture into evidence-based therapy (such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, EMDR, DBT, and many others) to destigmatize the client’s mental health experience and promote engagement in treatment. This workshop will focus on how providers can utilize ST to help trauma survivors to not only share their traumatic experience but to also change their trauma narrative to a more empowered perspective.

This workshop will demonstrate on how we can use ST to help clients feel understood and supported. As a provider, you will be able to learn how to incorporate the client’s passions about pop culture into treatment as strengths even if you don’t have any prior experience with pop culture yourself. This workshop will help you to expand the client’s emotional vocabulary, and to assist the client in becoming their own version of a superhero in real life (IRL), fostering posttraumatic growth and to be more willing to engage in treatment-related practices.
