Division IV
Public Service

California Psychological Association (CPA) Division IV, Psychologists in Public Service, represents the professional interests of psychologists employed by the public sector or “public service”. “Public service” meaning traditionally those salaried employees who provide psychological services through their employment by government agencies (federal, state, county, city, district, etc.*), educational institutions and, inclusively, health care systems that are established to meet the psychological needs of target populations in the context of a comprehensive, public medical service.

Division IV advocates for psychological expertise to be a regular part of medical service delivery ensuring that the general public has psychological input into clinical decision making; that psychologists are part of overall treatment planning decisions, provide direct treatment, and ensure that psychologists have direct input into policy and practice decisions that impact the mental, behavioral and social health of individuals through psychologists’ involvement in organized medical staffs, legislative bodies and state policy decision making.

 * This may include but not be limited to prisons, state hospitals, developmental centers, paroles, incarcerated juveniles, community mental health, group homes, specialized homes, etc.
